The carnival is a very old party, which probably had its origin in Greece. In the beginning it was a celebration for gods, and by the year 590 A. C. it was adopted by the catholic church and included in its calendar. It began to happen then before the Lent period, when people should be in abstinence and fasting.
Every country that adopted Carnival influenced it with its own culture, but the idea was always the same: celebrate the pleasures of life in an extravagant way. The custom of wearing costumes began in the Victorian era, in the XX century and Paris was its greatest exponent.
The most famous Carnivals in the world are: Brazil, Venice in Italy, New Orleans at the US, Nice in France and some cities in Spain. In Brazil, there is carnival in the whole country; amazing parades and parties eveywhere. The most famous carnivals are in Rio de Janeiro, which is the biggest in the world, with 2.5 million people, Salvador (Bahia's capital) and Recife, in Pernambuco state.
It's a dazzling party, full of colors and here you can see pictures that illustrate this. Let the party begin!
